Located just 19 km offshore, it’s where the locals go — to swim in the pristine bays, laze on the white-sand beaches, snorkel in turquoise water, go fishing or to simply just "chill out".
No cars allowed
Rotto, as it’s known, is a car-free zone, which adds to its relaxed feel. Hiring a bike is the best way to get around — and to find those secluded beaches and secret fishing spots on the other side of the island.
Pristine beaches
With 63 sheltered beaches and 20 bays to choose from, you can always find a place to get away. Surrounded by coral reefs and shipwrecks, the underwater life in and around the island makes diving and snorkeling both breathtaking and beautiful for expert and novices alike.
The star attraction
The most famous animal inhabiting Rottnest Island is a small marsupial known as the quokka. Growing less than a foot tall, the quokka cannot be found anywhere else in the world which is why it is a star attraction on the Island.
A fascinating history
Visitors can experience Aboriginal, European, colonial, maritime, military, recreational and social heritage on Rottnest Island, which to a certain extent is reflective of the development of the State of Western Australia.
Rottnest has a fascinating, if not dark, history. It was once used as an Aboriginal prison and also as an internment camp during the wars. As a result there are many early colonial buildings and underground tunnels to explore.

There's also a guided bus and historic train tour, or you can just hop on and off the Bayseeker Bus when it suits. Other attractions include guided walking tours, lighthouse tours, scenic flights, the Rottnest Museum, as well as tennis and golf. With so much to see and do there's something to suit everyone's budget and taste.

ユニークな動植物の宝庫
ロットネスト島には、オーストラリア大陸から独立した環境の中で育まれたユニークな動植物が数多く生息しています。島の名前の由来にもなっているクオッカは、カンガルーやワラビーと同種の有袋類で、今日ではこの島にのみ生息する貴重な生き物になってます。その他にも島のシンボルでブロッコリーの木の愛称で知られているロットネストアイランドティーツリーの群生や、ロットネストアイランドデイジーを代表する色鮮やかのワイルドフラワーもご覧いただけます。
エメラルドグリーンの海
ロットネスト島周辺の海域にはメインランド近郊の海域には存在しないルーインカレントという暖流が流れており、パース沿岸の海と比べて水温も５度ほど高く、島周辺に生息する魚介類の種類も９８種類と多いことで知られています。周囲４０ｋｍの島の沿岸にはエメラルドグリーンに輝く海と純白の砂浜が点在し、暗礁に囲まれた穏やかなシャルタービーチでは、小さなお子様連れでも安全に楽しく海水浴やシュノーケルを楽しんでいただけます。その他、ダイビング、サーフィン、ウィンドサーフィン、カヤック、フィッシングなどなど、ロットネスト島周辺の海で楽しんでいただけるアクティビティーは多く、地元の人々だけでなく、国内外から毎年多くのマリンスポーツファンが訪れることでも知られています。
